4 Photography Workshops in 1 – Okefenokee Swamp, Jekyll Island, St Simon, St. Augustine
In this incredible 4-day workshop and tour, you will have the opportunity to photograph 4 incredible and photographic locations that should be on every nature photographer’s bucket list.
In the Okefenokee Swamp, we will photograph all kinds of awesome animals including Alligators, Turtles, Bears, and many others. We will walk out a legendary Boardwalk into the “Land of the Trembling Earth”, while photographing cypress trees, amazing reflections, and several different historical structures, etc. We will follow this path to an incredible 90’ tall observation tower, where we will be able to photograph the swamp from above the canopy. Mid-day, we will have lunch on site at their little restaurant where you can get anything from salad to gator tail. After lunch, we will board the train that will take us on an enchanting tour of the swamp and out to Pioneer Island. Once the train tour is complete, we will take a boat tour out into the swamp to photograph beautiful lilies close-up, incredible scenes out of fairytales and hopefully some baby alligators. 😊
These are two of the most beautiful and photographic areas along the east coast. We will begin by shooting the sunrise at Driftwood beach on Jekyll Island and then after breakfast, we will tour the island taking time to explore some gorgeous old churches and other buildings as well as along the shore to see some ships passing by, as well as some beautiful wading birds and maybe even an eagle or two. I have also had the opportunity several times to photograph horses and riders out enjoying the morning beach as well. There is always a surprise waiting at Jekyll Island.
St. Simon’s Island:
St. Simons Island is one of my favorite places to photograph, especially the light house. We will photograph that historic and beautiful little town and seashore area finishing up the day with the sunset and night sky behind the lighthouse.
St. Augustine Alligator Farm:
Even though the name suggests that its all about the alligators and granted there a ton of alligators in this park, we are there for the birds! This is an absolutely amazing location to see nesting birds of a variety of species such as Roseate Spoonbills, Whooping Cranes, several kinds of herons, including the blue, tricolor and night herons, and many more. This is by far my favorite place to get close-up shots of birds, especially baby birds. The birds are not in captivity either. They come and go as they wish. But due to the fact that their only predators here are the alligators themselves and they don’t climb trees, its an awesome nesting location and just covered in birds during the spring. That is why we have planned this trip at the time when we should be able to see the largest variety of baby birds. This truly is a Birders’ Paradise!
The first 5 people to sign up for this workshop will also receive an Annual Photographers Pass to the St. Augustine Alligator Farm, which allows you to go in any time you want to for a year from the workshop. Its an $89.99 value bonus!
Post Editing Workshop Included:
If all of that is not enough, on the final day, we will take time to go over some editing techniques using Adobe Photoshop. I will meet you where you are and help you to edit these images from Camera Raw through Final Save.
After the post processing, we will have a photography contest for anyone who wishes to enter. Every person that enters will receive a discount off future workshops. 1st – 3rd places will also win a ribbon and additional percentages off of future workshops. Once you complete this contest, you will also be invited to enter into the Annual St. Augustine Alligator Farm Photo Contest, where you might win other awards and prizes (dependent on their current offers).
Who is this workshop for:
From beginner to advanced, this workshop is truly every nature lovers dream photography trip. I will work with each student one-on-one and meet you where you are so that I can help you reach all of your personal goals. You will come away with some amazing pictures and a new skill set. Together, we will make sure of it 😊
One non-photographer guest is allowed per person. Guests have to pay their own admission fees, etc, such as the photographers pass. These workshops are such a great adventure and can be even more fun when shared with a loved one.
Note: Do Not RSVP with a PLUS ONE when registering unless they are also a photographer. If you do so, it will require payment for both. Just register yourself and message me to let me know you will be bringing a quest.
What you will need:
Camera with manual controls
Circular Polarizing Filter
Neutral Density Filter
Plenty of SD cards, compact flash or external memory (You will want to take a LOT of pictures on this trip!)
Extra Batteries and/or charging system
Snacks and drinks. Other food options will be discussed on the discussion board as time gets close to the workshop. Often people bring potluck style meals to share, etc. Please make any special dietary requirements known as well.
Recommended but not required:
Accommodations are not provided for this workshop but shareable accommodations are often available in a central location. Please post any request to share accommodations in the comments section below to begin plans for those arrangements.
Transportation, including airfare, is not provided. However, carpooling is encouraged for those that wish to do so. We make these trips fun as well as educational and sharing them with others as we go along only enhances the whole experience. If you do wish to carpool, make it known if you have any issues such as car sickness, etc. or if you prefer to drive, etc.
For this workshop, as with most of mine, we will be shooting fairly late in the evening, most days, at least until after sunset and sometimes we keep shooting well into the night if someone wants to shoot some night sky images.
At least the day that we shoot Jekyll, we will be getting up early to be at the location and set up by the time the sun rises. Any part of the workshop that anyone wants to skip is welcome to do so and join us at the next place or time.
Also, the birding excursion that we will be going on, please keep in mind that we will be very close to the birds. Some of them you could potentially reach out and touch. They are extremely used to being that close to humans and pretty much ignore us altogether, but if you have allergies, etc., keep that in mind. You will be THAT close to the birds!
The nesting birds that we will be photographing are NOT in captivity. They come and go as they wish. They fly into this area as it is the perfect nesting area with the trees, so many other birds, and no predators except the alligators. The alligators are in captivity and are down below the boardwalks. So you will see a LOT of those as well, if you can take your eyes off of the birds and hatchlings :)
